This unknown artist has painted a portrait of an unknown boy. It is anicely painted portrit. The artist is highly competent. It is interesting that the work of a competent atist like this can be lost to history. We cn see that it is difficult to identuify naive/folk artists, but this is quite a competent artist. The portrait is classified only as 'English School'. The boy looks to be about 9 years old. His outfit does not look like school wear, but his military-styled peak cap with a center tassle clearly identified him as a school boy. It is difficult to describe his outfit. As best we can tell, it was a tunic, in this case we see a green velvet tunic. The tunic was a major school syle in the first half of the 19th century. It was an unusual tunic as much of the the front was cut away to best show off the frilly blouse he is wearing with a lace collar. Also notice the tight waist and how the skirt of the tunic billows out. One reason that this can not be a dress is that boys did not wear dresses to school. The portrait was undated. One art expert dates it to about 1830.
