After the War during the Weimar period, Germany no longer had a sizeable army and another great war seemed unlilely. One of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles prevented the DRK from having any involvement in military matters. As a result, during the Weimar Republic), under the leadership of Joachim von Winterfeldt-Mencken, the DRK became a national organization focusing on social welfare. [Morgenbrod & Merkenich, p. 21.] Thus the Red Cross took on a range of civililan welfare functions. [Burleigh, p. 220.] The German Red Cross acquired a range of civilian responsibilities. We norte efforts to take cae of needy children. The warfor the most part was not fought on Germn territiry. As aesult, civilian casuaktues were limited. Children were, however, affected. Men were the primary bread winner for most families. And as result of the huge casualties, many German families lost their bread winner. Another serious problem was serious food shortages. Germany was not self suffuciuent in food prodution. And the British naval blockade cut off needed imports. The resulting food shortages meant widespread malnutrition affecting children. Germany began the War by creating a food crisis in Belgium after invading it. In the end Germany suffered greatly by the war they launched. America after the war provided food aid to Germany. We notice references to Deutches Rotes Kreuz kinderheimen--German Red Cross children's homes. We have not been able to find much infiormaion on these facilities. The DRK after the War also began addressing disaster relief.
