English Mail Order Catalogs and Clothing Advertisements with Boys Clothing: The 1970s

Figure 1.--A British mail order catalog, Freemans, show a wide range of boys clothes in 1974. We have little information about the company at this time. We notice both flared long pants and short cut continental-style short pants. These long pants are described as flared long pants, check trousers, and Oxford bags.

English mail order catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. English mail order catalogs and newspaper ads provide great detail on fashion trends. Littlewoods was the principal company selling mailorder clothing in Britain during the 1950s. Their catalog offers a wide range of boys clothing, including suits, coats, shirts, trousers, and hosiery. English boys are increasingly wearing long pants in the 1970s. The short pants that are worn for dress wear are shorter cut continentl styles. Shorts are, however increasingly being worn for casual summer wear and sports. Interestingly, when English boys stopped wearing 'culottes anglaises', what they wore were described as 'continental-style shorts'. At the same time as the Brits were looking to the continent for fashion ideas, the French started dressing their boys in longer culottes anglaises. It's curious how the British and rench admired each other's styles, yet they couldn't manage to both dress the same way at the same time.

1970s

We have found some items that look to be from the 1970s, but we can not date by year. One such item is a Robin's school jumper.

We have very limited information on 971. We do have a magazine advert for Clarks sandals. The company was famous for its school sandals--closed-toe "T" strap sandals. They were commonly worn by generations of school children. This advertisement promoted sandals for summer wear--"Sandal summer".

1973

A Freeman's catalog offered a Ladybird jacquard shirt and "bibbed topped trousers" (bib-front shorts) for younger boys.

A British mail order catalog, Freemans, show a wide range of boys clothes in 1974. We have little information about the company at this time. We notice both flared long pants and short cut continental-style short pants. The long knee-lngth hort pants are no longer offered for sale in Bitain, only the continental-style shorts. The long pants are described as flared long pants, check trousers, and Oxford bags.
