U.S. School Clothes: Benton Avenue School, 1910

Figure 1.--Here we see the Benton Avenue School in 191O. It looks like some of the younger children, perhaps 2nd graders. Theey wear a wide range of outfits. It looks to us like they dressed up for the portrait.

Here we have an elementary (primary) school located in Middleton, New York--the Benton Avenue School. The photo is dated 1910. This looks like a public, not a private school. We say this in part because some of the boys have holes in their black long stockings. Interestingly, the school is racially integrated. Notice the African American girls sitting second and third from the right and the two older boys at the left in the second row. The school building was built about 1882. Most of the boys wear kneepants or above-the-knee knickers. The variety of dress is interesting. One boy wears a sailor suit, another wears a floppy bow, and still another wears a belted double breasted blouse with large lapels. One boy hs a polka-dot blouse. This looks like some of rhe younger children at the school, perhapa the second graders.

Location

The school was located in Middleton, New York.

Chronology

The photo is dated 1910.

Integration

Interestingly, the school is racially integrated. Notice the African American girls sitting second and third from the right and the two older boys at the left in the second row. I'm looking at the photograph to see if we can detect any clues as to inter-personal relations. It is probably notable that the black bots and girls are grouped together.

Building

The school building was built about 1882.

Clothing

The variety of dress is interesting. The boys are mostly wearing blouses rather than suits. Several boys wear sailor outfits, bit it is difficult to make out just what some of the boys are wearing. One boy wears a sailor tunic. Another boys I think wears a sailor suit, but is behind some of the other children. Another wears a floppy bow, and still another wears a belted double breasted blouse with large lapels. One boy hs a polka-dot blouse. Most of the boys wear kneepants or above-the-knee knickers. The knickers seem to be the bloomer-knickers with elasticised legs rather than the knickers with buckle legs. Almost all of the children wear black long stockings.

Hair Styles

The boys have short hair cuts, but none have vlose-creopped hair. Two boys, one white boy and one black boy, have long hair. Some of the girls have hair bows.
