This is a photograph at the Flat School Hillsboro located in southern New Hampshire. Hillsboro is notable as the birthlace of President Franklin Pierce. The photographs we have found are undated, but look to us like the 1910s. The hairbows thegirls are wearing help date the portrait. Rural schools varied somewhat. Many are located in the countryside. Others like this one are located in small towns. Hilsboro had a population of 2,200 in 1910. We can see the white clapboard building in the background. This may be a two ronm school as we have two undated class portraits. Of course they may be from differnt yers, but the same year seems likely. There were two different teachers. Curiouly many of these rural shools were painted white, we are not sure where the term 'little red school house' came from. Some sources suggest that red paint was cheaper than other colors, perhaps why barns were often painted red.
