Figure 1.--The Urk School here is an example of a one-room school at the turn of the 20th century. We know that it was located in the Middle School District which we believe is located in upstate New York. Click on the image to see the inside of the school. The boys look to be mostly wearing kneepants, although it is a bot difficilt to tell.

The Urk School here is an example of a one-room school at the turn of the 20th century. We know that it was located in the Middle School District which we believe is located in upstate New York. A source identified the image here as being taken in 1900. This may, however, have been an estimate rather than a precise date. Here we have a photograph of both the inside and outside of the school. Like most of these schools it is painted white. I am not sure where the term "little red school house" came from. The boys look to be mostly wearing kneepants, although it is a bot difficilt to tell. Notice the girls wearing white pinafores. Click on the image to see the inside of the school. It is notable for being all ppered but completely lacking in maps, teaching aides, or the work of the children posted on the wall.
