Boys in the late 19th century connonly wore strap shoes with long stockings. Different styles of strap shoes were worn with long stockings. Black or other dark colors were the most common. Especially in the late 19th century, strapshoes were more common for affluent children. These were not the kind of shoes that could be commonly worn out of doors. After the turn of the 20th century, white became more common. Different weights of stockings were worn. Lighter weights were more common for dress occassions. Considerable differences existed between countries. Here we see two German brothers (figure 1). The two boys are dressed in a coordinated way with what
look to me like button-on matching suits (although with different neckwear).
They wore knee-length short pants with white long stockings and strap shoes.
Their father is apparently a Lutheran pastor (note the preaching tabs).
Note the white long stocking. Grman boys commonly wore long stockings, but not white long stockings very often. White long stov=ckings were much moire common for girls. The two boys seem to be about 5 and 8 years old.
