Bulgarian Boys' Garments: Sailor Suits

Figure 1.--Here we see a Bulgarian boy about 1910. Note the "V" collar done in lace and the striped dickey.

We note Bulgarian boys like boys in other European countries wearing sailor suits. They included many of the same basic garments such as tunics and standard sailor suits. Boys wore middy blouses, commonly with knee pants. We see both plain and striped dickies. Sailor suits were mostly worn in the cities by the elite and middle-class boys. This limited the populsarity of the sailor suit in Bulgaria. They were not common in the villages and country side where trafitional garments were still worn in the early-20th century. Here the German origins of the country's monarchy must have been a significant factor. Some of the detailing seems destinctly Bulgarian. Note the sailor suit on the previous page. We also see traditional suits. Most European boys had the traditional stripes on their sailor suits for detailing as were worn by actual sailors. We see these sailor suits with these stripes. Many Bulagrain boys wore sailor suits with more elaborate embroidery or even lace trim. Our information is still very limited so we do not yet know how common the various styles were in Bulgaria. We note white suits being worn in the summer and te dark suits in the winter. This was fairly standard throughout Europe. We do not know to what extent Bulgarian girls wore sailor-styled dresses.

Popularity

We note Bulgarian boys like boys in other European countries wearing sailor suits. Sailor suits were mostly worn in the cities by the elite and middle-class boys. Some of the boys wearing sailor dsuits clearly came from well-to-do families. This limited the populsarity of the sailor suit in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was a lagely agricultural country until after World War II. Sailor suits were not common in the villages and country side where trafitional garments were still worn in the early-20th century. Here the German origins of the country's monarchy must have been a significant factor.

Chronology

We do not know when the sailor suit first appeared in Bulgaria. We suspect it was introduced by the Bulgarian royal family of German origin. Bulgaria achieved a defgree of independence following the Russo-Turkish War (1878-79). Sailor suiys were popular in Grmny bd the Grman royals helped intriduce the stle to Bulgaria. The country had no real naval tradition, but the style became very ppopular among the urban middleclass. We do not have many 19th century examplws, we think because our Bulgarian 19th century archive is very limited. We have more 20th century images and note quite a number of boys wearing sailor suits in the early-20th century. A good example is an unidetified Sofia boy in the 1910s. He wars a classic hite stripped summer sailor suit.
