Unidentified San Francisco School (1890)

Figure 1.--At first we only see occassional school portraits, mostly class or small groupsuually not identified. Gradually the school portait became an established school tradition. We see studios by the 1880s specializing in school portraits. This generally meant a large school portrait amd individual class portits. We do not see separate individual portaits until the 20th century. Here we have a potrait of a studio specializing in school portraits. The namne of the school is not provided, only a title -- Happy School Days. And we know it was located in San Framcisco, California. It looks like a public primary school.

There is a substantial brick building. The class looks to a 6th grade class, 11-12 year olds. The boys display their violins and baseball bats. The girls their dolls. We can not make out a lot of detail. The girls wear dresses. he boys wear knee pants suits and long stockings. One boy wears a long pants suit, but we can only see the front row clearly. We do not see any Fauntleroy touches. This was very common uin the 1890s.
